DRS Intelligence & Avionic Solutions

On April 1, 2006, DRS Signal Technologies and DRS Engineering Development Labs were combined into a single entity and renamed DRS Intelligence & Avionic Solutions.

Former Engineering Development Labs, Inc. History

In 1986, Intelligence & Avionic Solutions (IAS) was founded originally as Engineering Development Labs, Inc., in Dayton, Ohio. In 1998, it was acquired by Paravant Inc., which was then acquired by DRS Technologies, Inc. (DRS on NYSE) in November 2002.  Today, the company exists as DRS IAS, a wholly owned subsidiary of DRS Technologies, Inc., with field support operations at Robins Air Force Base (AFB), GA, and Hurlburt Field, FL. Throughout this time, DRS IAS has continued to grow as a reputable defense contractor, with a consistent mission to provide specialized avionics, systems integration, and field service support to enhance the mission effectiveness and safety of military aircraft operations.

Over the course of the past 18 years, the company has built a portfolio of over 250 products to fulfill a wide variety of customers' requirements, ranging from new designs, to reverse engineering of obsolete designs, to build-to-print efforts. Major product families include Mission Processors, Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible Lighting Products, Color Displays, Special Purpose Interface Units, Tactical Receivers, and Altitude Hold and Hover Stabilization (AHHS) Systems. DRS IAS has the ability to deliver comprehensive solutions that include avionics and kit design, resolution of reliability and maintainability issues, avionics systems integration, software development, and field service support.  DRS IAS is ISO 9001:2000 certified, and is aggressively working towards a Level 3 Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) certification in 2006.

The company has built a solid reputation of on-schedule and on-cost performance with a very high level of customer satisfaction, as evidenced by the ongoing, long-term relationships that DRS IAS has with its customers.  Some of the company's recent customers include: U.S. Special Operations Command (i.e., - AFSOC, 160th SOAR, TAPO), Space Warfare Center's AF TENCAP Office, USN, and the Israeli Air Force.  With these customers, DRS IAS has acquired extensive expertise on a variety of platforms, including MH-47, MH-53, HH-60, C-130, and CH-53 aircraft.  DRS IAS's field service team has supported, and continues to support, our U.S. Armed Forces in numerous theater operations, including Operation Allied Force (OAF), Operations Northern/Southern Watch (ONW/OSW), and Operations Enduring/Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF).  Many of the company's field service personnel also have previous experience as members of our U.S. Armed Forces, making them uniquely qualified and knowledgeable in this capacity.

Recognized by the Air Force Association, whom awarded DRS EDL the 2001 Dr. Theodore von Karman Award in the Field of Science and Technology, for our participation with the USAF TENCAP HAVE CSAR Team on the Operation Northern/Southern Watch (ONW/OSW) "Bolt-On" MATT Receiver Integration Program.

Former Signal Technology History

DRS Signal Technologies was founded in 1990 by three engineers with over 70 years combined experience in the SIGINT (Signal Intelligence) world. Originally, the company was founded as Signal Technology Laboratories, Inc.

At the time of acquisition by Paravant Inc., a public company, the name was changed to STL of Ohio. In 2002, STL was acquired by DRS Technologies and its name was changed to DRS Signal Technologies (DRS-ST).

One of the goals of DRS-ST was to design and build special purpose hardware used in signal processing laboratories that was not available on the commercial market. This led to the development of hardware to distribute and switch 16 bit digital data among various processing activities. In DRS-ST's history, the company has developed over 30 different products. These products range from rather complex DSP (Digital Signal Processing) instruments used to enhance desired signals to special purpose interfaces.
